A mother expressed her disbelief after finding fentanyl in a Barbie doll box she had acquired for her young daughter.

On Saturday, March 21, Jade Adams bought a tampered Barbie doll during a shopping trip at Cargo Largo in Independence with her husband and daughter.

Around 10:18 AM, the Independent Police Department (IPD) was notified by Cargo Largo Security about a suspicious powder discovered in the packaging of a Barbie doll.

Upon investigation, IPD identified the substance as fentanyl and began working with Cargo Largo to ascertain the number of affected units that had been sold.

A spokesperson from the police stated, "It was determined that five compromised units had been sold. IPD has successfully located four of these units. Only one unit remains unaccounted for, and we are actively pursuing leads to track it down."

"It was found that the Barbie dolls themselves were intact. Fentanyl had been taped inside the back packaging. We have no reason to suspect that compromised units were distributed to other retailers, and there have been no reports of injuries. This investigation is ongoing," the spokesperson added.

Police statement regarding the investigation

In response to the alarming situation, Adams returned to the store to alert the staff, urging them to remove the dolls from their shelves.

Adams recounted her fear when speaking to WDAF, reflecting on the dangerous potential of the situation.

She remarked, "The children could have gotten into that, dusted it all over themselves, their home, or anywhere it was opened. It's not just me; it’s particularly concerning for the kids. That's my youngest child, and it's terrifying."

In a Facebook post, Adams wrote, "My parents and I raised this awareness! I bought my daughter a Barbie yesterday and opened it to find a bag full of drugs! It's horrifying to have such items in children’s toys."
