Oscars Moving from Hollywood to Peacock Theater in Central Los Angeles by 2029

The Academy Awards are poised for a significant transition as organizers have revealed plans to shift the ceremony from its traditional Hollywood venue to the Peacock Theater located in central Los Angeles, set to commence in 2029.

The Oscars will depart from the Dolby Theatre, which has served as its host since 2002, and move to the larger Peacock Theater. This change signifies the end of an era for a venue that has become synonymous with the glamour and prestige of the awards, situated along the famed Hollywood Walk of Fame.

This relocation is part of a multi-year collaboration between the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and AEG, the group that owns the LA Live complex where the Peacock Theater is located. Under the terms of this agreement, the Oscars will take place at the new venue through to 2039.

Todd Goldstein, Chief Revenue Officer at AEG, expressed that this move aligns with their goal of hosting major cultural events worldwide, promising a better overall experience that pays tribute to creativity and excellence.

Although this transition shifts the ceremony away from its classic Hollywood roots, it also marks a return to its earlier history. Prior to its establishment in Hollywood, the Oscars were frequently held at central Los Angeles venues like the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and Shrine Auditorium.

Academy leaders, including CEO Bill Kramer and President Lynette Howell Taylor, have welcomed this partnership, emphasizing AEG’s history of managing state-of-the-art live performance spaces.

In conjunction with the venue change, the Oscars will also experience a substantial transformation in broadcasting. Having aired on ABC for over five decades, the annual ceremony will switch to live streaming on YouTube starting in 2029, where it will be accessible globally and free for audiences.

Before this transition occurs, the awards will continue to be held at the Dolby Theatre, with the notable 100th ceremony scheduled for 2028 still to take place there and broadcasted on ABC.

These anticipated changes signify a new chapter for the Academy Awards, showcasing a commitment to modernizing the event while safeguarding its status as the pinnacle of accolades in the film industry.
