President Bola Tinubu is preparing for a significant two-day state visit to the United Kingdom in March, an event announced by Buckingham Palace. This trip marks a historic moment, as it is the first state visit to the UK by a Nigerian head of state in 37 years. The last such visit was undertaken by Military President Ibrahim Babangida in 1989, who was hosted by the late Queen Elizabeth II for four days.

State visits are recognised as a crucial tool for soft-power diplomacy, leveraging royal hospitality to foster stronger relationships with key international partners, according to the BBC. The royal communications office confirmed on Saturday that the upcoming visit is extended at the invitation of King Charles III.

President Tinubu will be accompanied on the visit by his wife, the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu. Both President Tinubu and King Charles III ascended to their respective positions in May 2023 and have met on multiple occasions. Their most recent encounter before this announcement was in November 2023, where they met ahead of the COP28 climate summit in Dubai. Tinubu described that meeting as a vital step in enhancing bilateral ties between Nigeria and the UK.

Additionally, King Charles III hosted President Tinubu at Buckingham Palace for a private meeting in September 2024. While the specific agenda for the March 18 visit has not yet been released, and details of planned events are pending, Buckingham Palace has indicated that further information will be provided in due course.

King Charles III maintains a long-standing connection with Nigeria and has previously expressed a fondness for the local Pidgin English and Afrobeats music genre. Prior to his accession to the throne, he visited Nigeria four times as the Prince of Wales, with these visits occurring in 1990, 1999, 2006, and 2018. On the 2018 trip, he was joined by Camilla, who was then the Duchess of Cornwall.

In 2023, the King's Trust International, formerly known as The Prince's Trust, formally established its presence in Nigeria. The organisation launched a new initiative focused on addressing the challenge of youth unemployment within the country.
