All flight operations at a Texas airport have been halted following a national security alert.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that all flights to and from El Paso International Airport have been suspended.
This restriction will be in place starting from 11:30 PM on February 10 and will last until 11:30 PM on February 20.
The FAA has designated the airspace surrounding the airport as 'national defence airspace', advising pilots that failure to comply with the new rules may lead to detention.
According to an official statement: "The United States Government may utilize deadly force against any airborne aircraft deemed to pose an imminent threat to security."
El Paso airport officials reported: "The FAA issued a temporary flight restriction with little notice, preventing all flights to and from El Paso as well as our neighboring area, Santa Teresa, NM.
"This restriction affects all types of aircraft operations, including commercial, cargo, and general aviation, and will be in effect from February 10 at 11:30 PM (MST) until February 20 at 11:30 PM (MST).
"Airport staff are in communication with the FAA and awaiting further instructions.
"Meanwhile, airlines serving El Paso are being informed of these restrictions, which are reportedly security-related.
"Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for the latest updates on their flight schedules."
