An individual on social media platform X has shared a distressing personal account in response to a prompt inviting the sharing of true experiences.
The event unfolded in 2023, coinciding with Nigeria's challenging cash redesign and scarcity period.
At the time, the user had recently gained admission to a university but was unable to complete their registration immediately, leaving them without the means to pay their school fees. Their parents entrusted them with the funds to safeguard until they could be used for the invoice.
Due to the ongoing cash crisis, the user opted to seek assistance from a close friend from secondary school who operated a POS business. The user requested that this friend transfer the funds into their bank account.
The friend cited network issues and assured the user that the transfer would happen later.
However, the anticipated alert never arrived.
Upon inquiry the next day, she attributed the delay to banking problems. What began as a few days of excuses stretched into weeks, until finally, the friend admitted to having utilized the money to settle her own financial obligations, vowing to reimburse the user in due time.
Despite her promises, the repayment never materialized.
The user expressed feelings of betrayal, stating that they pleaded and cried for their money back, but to no avail. Overwhelmed by shame and fear, they found it difficult to disclose the entire situation to their parents.
Consequently, without the means to pay their school fees, the user was unable to return to university.
For several months, they maintained the facade, even resorting to faking academic results to justify their absence.
In 2024, the user attempted the JAMB examinations once more and was fortunate to secure admission into a different university. Nevertheless, the feelings of guilt lingered.
They confessed that each night, remorse weighs heavily on them for deceiving their parents, all stemming from a trust that was ultimately shattered at a particularly unfortunate time.
