Oba Rashidi Ladoja, the Olubadan of Ibadan, paid a courtesy visit to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Thursday, commending the Lagos State government for its substantial achievements in infrastructure development.
During the meeting at Lagos House in Marina, Oba Ladoja conveyed his gratitude to Governor Sanwo-Olu and the state for their assistance during his coronation last year. He highlighted the governor's commitment to infrastructure projects in Lagos.
The monarch explained that his visit was to express appreciation to the governor and key figures in Lagos State for their backing during his enthronement, noting that Lagos holds a special place in his personal and traditional history.
Oba Ladoja, who also chairs the Oyo State Traditional Council of Obas and Chiefs, applauded the state's initiatives in managing traffic and transportation, stating that the current administration's infrastructure provisions have successfully eased traffic congestion.
He specifically praised the Lagos Blue and Red rail lines, as well as the water transportation systems, observing that these have considerably shortened travel times across various parts of the state.
The Olubadan reiterated his call for the inclusion of a constitutional role for traditional rulers across Nigeria, asserting that such recognition would enhance governance and foster better cooperation between traditional leaders and government bodies.
He further clarified that while there is no existing dispute between the traditional institution and the Oyo State government, a constitutional role would solidify their relationship.
Responding, Governor Sanwo-Olu referred to Ibadan as a central point for the Yoruba people and commended Oba Ladoja for his crucial role in promoting peace and unity within Oyo State and beyond.
Sanwo-Olu thanked the Olubadan for his visit and acknowledged his service to the nation, praising his forward-thinking leadership as the current Olubadan of Ibadanland.
He offered prayers for a peaceful and impactful reign for the monarch, expressing confidence that Oba Ladoja's leadership would usher in development and transformation for Ibadanland and Nigeria.
"We thank God for your (Oba Ladoja) life. We thank Almighty God for your leadership in our country and for the several years that you have served this country. And now, you have graciously accepted to serve the people of Ibadan.
"Our prayer is that your tenure will not only be long but will bring transformational development to the entire Ibadanland, your state and Nigeria in general. God will spare you. God will give you renewed energy, strength and wisdom to rule and rule well.
"On behalf of the government and people of Lagos State, we thank you for coming to acknowledge and appreciate us. Lagos will continue to stand with you and your kingdom," he stated.
