The United Kingdom will replace the issuance of physical visa stickers for Nigerian travellers with electronic eVisas, effective from February 25, 2026, as part of a comprehensive update to the country’s immigration framework.
UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) announced this policy change in Abuja, stating that all newly issued Visit visas to Nigerian citizens will operate under an electronic system, marking a move towards a fully digital border control environment.
Under this new arrangement, successful visa applicants will no longer find a visa vignette in their passport. Instead, they will have access to their immigration status online via a secure UKVI account.
The British authorities underscored that the application procedures will remain unchanged. Nigerian applicants must continue to fill out the standard online application, attend a Visa Application Centre for biometric data collection, and fulfill the established eligibility criteria. The only alteration pertains to how the visa is issued and accessed.
UKVI emphasized that Nigerians possessing valid physical visa stickers currently will not be impacted by this change. These existing visas will continue to be valid until their stated expiration dates and will not require replacement due to the shift to eVisas.
Gill Lever, the British Deputy High Commissioner in Abuja, explained that this initiative aims to simplify the travel experience while enhancing border security.
"We are dedicated to easing travel for Nigerians to the UK. Transitioning to digital visas streamlines a crucial part of the procedure, fortifying security and minimizing dependence on paper documentation," she stated.
UKVI indicated that the eVisa approach is anticipated to expedite processing times because passports will no longer need to be held for visa stamping. Travelers will also be empowered to manage their immigration status online whenever they wish.
Officials noted further security enhancements, asserting that, unlike physical stickers, eVisas cannot be misplaced, stolen, or altered. The system will also allow real-time verification of immigration status.
Once a visa is approved, applicants must establish a free UKVI account to access and share their eVisa details as necessary.
This reform is part of a broader initiative to modernize the UK’s border management system, with Nigerian travellers being among the first groups to fully embrace the digital visa process.
For business travellers, students, and frequent visitors, this change signifies a substantial procedural update, transitioning from passport-based documentation to a secure online immigration record as the new standard for UK entry approval.
