The Ghanaian administration has officially recalled its High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, following serious allegations linking him to electoral malpractice during a recent party primary in Ghana.

This decision was made by President John Dramani Mahama and was disclosed in a presidential announcement made over the weekend.

According to the announcement, the recall is effective immediately, with instructions given to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to manage any required diplomatic and administrative procedures.

Ghanaian High Commissioner to Nigeria recalled amidst electoral controversy

The action stems from accusations of voter inducement and vote-buying related to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary for the Ayawaso East Constituency. At the time, Ahmed was not only the Ghanaian envoy to Nigeria but also a candidate in the primary.

Reports from the election indicated that items like television sets and food supplies had been distributed to delegates, which many observers and opponents characterized as inducements. Ahmed, however, insists that these items were merely goodwill gestures and were not intended to sway voting decisions.

In its reasoning for the recall, the presidency stated that this measure was vital to maintain the ethical standards expected from public officials and to prevent any assumptions of impropriety. The government expressed concerns about a potential violation of Ghana’s Code of Conduct for political appointees, which regulates the political engagements of officials in office.

The primary in Ayawaso East was held to determine the NDC's candidate for an upcoming parliamentary by-election due to the passing of the former member of parliament. Reports indicate that Ahmed emerged victorious, receiving the highest votes among contenders.

Simultaneously, the NDC has initiated an internal inquiry into the allegations of inducement and other irregularities that occurred during the primary election, aiming to safeguard the integrity of its democratic processes.

The recall of the High Commissioner represents an unusual diplomatic step and highlights the Mahama administration's commitment to ensuring accountability and ethical integrity in public services.
